PhD Thesis: Handling Qualities of the Flying Wing and Multidisciplinary Approach
This work is related to the Flying Wing prohject and will cover a wide spectrum of activities.
The Flying Wing concept represents:
-Reduced community noise level
-Reduced structure weight per pax
-Increased lift ration compared to classical aircraft configurations
-Reduced control surfaces lever arm that penalyse it particularly in Handling Qualities and controllability Hence, the first part of the activity is related to Flight Mechanics and Handling Qualities. It will cover different topics such as:
-Production of aerodynamic data for Handling Qualities, using fast CFD aerodynamic code
-Analysis of the longitudinal and lateral Handling Qualities situation
-Improvement of the situation by implementation of dedicated command laws

This part will be performed in cooperation with the Aerodynamic, Loads and Flight Control Departments.
Another characteristic of the Flying Wing is the strong coupling which exists between the different aircraft disciplines such as Handling Qualities, Performances, Aerodynamics, loads and Weights.
Hence, the second part of the activity is dedicated to the multidisciplinary design of a Flying Wing. The work will be performed using an integrated platform where the different discipline tools can be located and used together within a coupled approach. The final scope of the work will be a final global sizing of the proposed Flying Wing.
This role provides an opportunity to gain good knowledge of the company and its processes and therefore, an occasion for greater personal development.

With an Engineering degree with a good aeronautical background, especially in Aerodynamics and Handling Qualities (simulation, modeling, flight dynamics, etc), you are highly motivated by new concepts aeronautical features, naturally cusious and able to develop strong capabilities for analysis and synthesis. The numerical tools which will be used are mainly based on Matlab/Scilab. The scope of the work is not devoted to code developments although it is possible that this will be necessary to perform some parts of the work.
