PhD: Design Optimization Process for Passenger Transport Aircraft
A classical approach for the preliminary design of passenger transport aircraft is to optimize on (or several) cost function(s) under various physical or operational performance constraints. This optimization is based on best current assumptions about aircraft performances, while margins are taken to ensure requirements are confidently met. Sensitivity studies are then used to validate the final definition. This deterministic approach do not makes the best use of the uncertainty information that may already be available at the beginning of a project.

Recent progress in the state of the art of numerical design seems to enable the introduction of uncertainty management in the deep core of design tools, in order to manage directly a probabilistic optimization process. Such a development would also significantly improve the capability to compare classical aircraft configuration with unconventional ones, for which the uncertainty level is typically higher.

Tasks
The objectives of this thesis are to define and experiment a robust design optimization process for passenger transport aircrafts. You will have to analyze the state of the art of classical preliminary design approach in use in the host Department, and propose a new process, based on uncertainty propagation techniques, able to propose optimal aircraft configurations under probabilistic constraints. The granularity of physical models in use in preliminary design is expected to be compatible with the use of stochastic methods, without a prohibitive impact on computation time.
